Named after its developer, Dr. Clarence Gonstead, this approach came from his engineering background. His “foundation principle” explains how a subluxation pattern in one area of the spine can produce compensatory changes in another.

A Thorough Evaluation

Meter Image
The two probes detect minute differences in temperature up and down your spine.

After studying your health history, we conduct a complete examination. This generally includes full spine X-rays and precise analysis. Using a small heat-sensing instrument, subluxation patterns are revealed by slight differences in temperature. Finally, we use our fingertips to “palpate” or feel the location of individual bones and how they may differ from their normal position.

Full Spine Correction

With a complete picture of your spine it’s time to make the needed corrections.

To adjust your lower spine and pelvis, we’ll have you lie on your side. Subluxations in the middle back are corrected as you assume a comfortable kneeling position. When you are seated, we can restore the integrity of your spine without twisting or rotating your neck.

Sometimes you’ll hear a slight “popping” sound that we call cavitation. Sometimes you won’t. Either way, better health is on the way!

Safe and Effective

The Gonstead Technique is acknowledged as one of the safest systems of evaluating and caring for the spine.

Gonstead Adjusting Equipment

The Hilo

Hilo Table Image
The HiLO table is a mechanically assisted table that pivots from a vertical to a horizontal position. With movable segments of the table (drop pieces) this table allows us to adjust any aspect of the spine in the prone (face down) position with the least pressure possible.

The Knee Chest Table

Knee Chest Table Image
The knee chest table is used to adjust everything from the pelvis to the upper neck. It works well for late term pregnant patients, people with rib injuries such as fractures that cannot lay on a solid surface and for the more solid patients that do not adjust well on the pelvic bench or hilo.

The Cervical Chair

Cervical Chair Image
This is used to examine the patient in a weight bearing position. This is used to adjust the cervical vertebra.

The Pelvic Bench

Pelvic Bench Image
The pelvic bench is used to adjust the ilium (hips), the sacrum (tailbone that connects onto both hips to form the sacroiliac joints) and the lumbar vertebrae. The pelvis side posture adjustment is also unique to the Gonstead Method.

The Adjustment

X-Ray Image
To the correct the subluxation we then do a spinal adjustment. This involves a light force and quick thrust to adjust the bone in a specific direction to get pressure off the nerve.

Innate Intelligence

Once the subluxation is corrected through the adjustment the nerve is no longer under pressure. The NORMAL flow of that nerve is restored and the body has an ability to heal itself. It always wants to work at 100% and by enabling the nervous system to function properly the body can heal itself. This is known as innate intelligence.

The Gonstead Adjustment

After a complete evaluation your chiropractor will have a thorough understanding of your problem. It is then possible to provide a SPECIFIC, ACCURATE and PRECISE correction. The focus is to adjust the segments that are the cause of the problem. The Gonstead system of analysis and correction allows the adjustment to be safe and effective in restoration of the spine and nervous system. It is important to have you spine checked on a regular basis and not left until you experience a symptom or pain. This will help maintain optimum health via proper spinal function. The conditions used in the Gonstead system of analysis help determine if certain adjustments are required. There may be times where your Gonstead chiropractor, once they have examined you, decide that an adjustment is not required.

Did you know only 10% of the nervous system actually experiences pain? This means you can still have health problems even when you are pain free. Therefore, it is always good to maintain your health through regular chiropractic check-ups.

Gonstead Chiropractic involves a specific correction of the subluxation- this is known as an adjustment. The adjustment is very different from a manipulation.

Below is a table that highlights the major difference

Non specific “global” movement to multiple vertebral joints in multiple directions Specific Contact point with a specific angle to restore normal mechanics and ONE joint
Performed to increase mobility Performed to reduce irritation to a specific nerve
Contacts several joints Contacts one specific joint, not aggravating other joints.
Long leaver contacts Short leaver
Performed at end range of movement Performed in normal/ neutral range of motion
Short Term relief Long term relief

What is Chiropractic Neurology?

Image of Runner

Chiropractic Neurology is a science-based health care specialty that focuses on optimizing the function of the nervous system using conservative therapies to improve health. This specialty involves a functional approach to the analysis and treatment of the nervous system. Chiropractic neurologists are specialists in evaluating the function of the brain and nervous system. This is particularly valuable for patients with difficult conditions who have been unable to obtain a named diagnosis or solution for their problem. Often, this is as a result of physiological dysfunction rather than a named process of pathology (disease).

What does a Chiropractic Neurologist do?

We all have dynamic brains that grow and develop based on experiences, environment and genetics. Often, one part of our brain will develop more so than another, or one part will be used more at work or school than another. It is this difference that we see in people that are more artistic (right brain) or more analytical (left brain). Normally this difference is minimal and does not adversely affect our lives. If the deficit becomes too great, however, it can manifest as outward signs and symptoms ranging from pain or weakness to learning disabilities. This functional deficit can be present with or without the occurrence of disease. However, this is not to say that the condition is psychological or “all in the mind”, instead, it is a physical manifestation of a functional deficit.

We treat patients with difficult or complex conditions

Chiropractic neurology utilizes evaluations and treatments that are taught in both chiropractic and medical schools. Where chiropractic neurologists excel is in diagnosing and treating functional deficits, not solely pathology (disease). To assess the brain and body, chiropractic neurologists use traditional physiological tests such as: blood pressure, heart rate, muscle testing, and sensory and motor testing of the cranial and peripheral nerves. In addition, chiropractic neurologists will tailor specific functional tests for each patient. These functional tests may be as simple as balance, co-ordination, and eye movements, to more complicated test involving particular areas of the brain such as: vestibulo-ocular tests, optokinetic tests, pursuit and saccade testing, blind spot evaluation, radiography, postural analysis, vestibular and cerebellar testing.

Who may benefit from Chiropractic Neurology?

Anyone suffering from the following may benefit:

  • Vertigo, Dizziness & Balance Problems
  • Movement Disorders, Tremors & Dystonia
  • Visual Disturbances & Eye Fatigue
  • Migraines & Headaches
  • Memory & Concentration Difficulties
  • Chronic Pain in the Neck/Back/Limbs
  • Peripheral Nerve Injuries (carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel)
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
  • Learning & Attention Disorders ADD/ADHD/OCD
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Irritable Bowel
  • Sleeplessness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Tourette’s
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Weight Gain
  • Scoliosis
  • Migraines & Headaches
  • Hormonal Dysfunction
  • Chronic or Complicated Conditions

What types of treatments are used?

Once the deficit has been diagnosed, a customized treatment protocol is implemented to improve the function of the brain and the other systems affected. Chiropractic neurologists do not treat with drugs or surgery. Instead, they utilize less invasive and generally natural treatments are utilized to improve the function and control of the nervous system. These may include specific chiropractic adjustments, physical modalities and exercises, nutrition, cognitive exercises, auditory and visual stimulation, or eye tracking exercises.

It is well accepted that chiropractic adjustments of the spine affect the function of the nervous system. Most people associate chiropractic with back and neck pain. However, the advances in brain research and imaging strongly support the specialty of chiropractic neurology. This advanced branch of chiropractic offers new hope for those who have not found relief from conventional treatment.

How are Chiropractic Neurologists trained?

Chiropractic neurologists undergo specific post-graduate training in the field of Neurology. Chiropractic Neurologists are overseen and accredited by an independent board, American Chiropractic Neurology Board (A.C.N.B.) To become board certified, a candidate must pass a written, oral and practical examination. This training is recognized by the National Organization for Competency Assurance (N.O.C.A.) and the U.S. Dept. of Education. More information can be found at

Brain Image

The brain and nervous system require three essential needs to be met in order to function optimally and resist neurodegeneration. These 3 keys are FUEL, OXYGEN and ACTIVATION. If one of these is either not adequately supplied or is not in balance with the other three, then the brain and nervous system cannot function well and are at significant risk for degeneration. Neurodegeneration is permanent!

  1. FUEL – the brain requires an adequate supply of glucose (blood sugar). If insufficient blood sugar is available to the brain, then brain function suffers and free radicals are created which can damage the brain. Excess blood sugar also causes damage to brain cells. Glucose dysregulation has long been proposed as a mechanism in Alzheimers. All of the symptoms of low blood sugar (shaky, lightheaded, irritable, confused…) are symptoms of brain dysfunction!
  2. OXYGEN – Almost all persons surviving five minutes or more of complete oxygen deprivation or 15 minutes of “substantial” hypoxia (low oxygen) sustain permanent brain damage. Fungus can survive in low oxygen because they don’t need it to make energy. We require oxygen to make energy and the brain requires ALOT of it, as the brain uses 20% of the body’s oxygen. There are many suboptimal health conditions which restrict oxygen to the tissues which can be improved through natural methods to support optimal brain function. Improving oxygen delivery to the brain is extremely important in improving brain function and is a primary consideration to the Functional Neurologist.
  3. ACTIVATION – Brain function is dependent upon activation. Activation is primarily supplied through sensory systems. The most important sensory systems for brain function are NEURO-MUSCULO-SKELETAL and BALANCE (VESTIBULAR). The brain converts gravity into neurological activation through joints and muscles, most importantly from the spine as we sit, stand and move. It is a marvel of creation that the only unavoidable sensory input, gravity, is the primary sense which maintains the health of our brain. Identifying and correcting poor balance function is of paramount importance to a Functional Neurologist. Of course, all sensory input is important and should be symmetrical in order to optimize brain health.

Drawing of Brain

By now you have probably heard: There Are Unique Differences Between the Right and Left Sides of the Brain.

Indeed, this is very true.

Although the brain functions as a whole,

The Right and Left Hemispheres Are So Specialized That it is Almost Like We Have Two Separate Brains

Operating in us at all times, providing us with completely different perspectives of ourselves and our world. Like a Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde buried deep within our brain.

There are many misconceptions about the way that the left and right hemisphere’s function.

Many people believe that women are more right brained and men are more left brained. This is not the case!

In fact, normally functioning men are more right brain dominant and normally functioning women use their two hemispheres more symmetrically. This allows typical men to exhibit better spacial and executive function and allows typical women to multitask and handle stress better.

The Differences in the Timing and Development of the Right and Left Sides of The Brain Are Very Significant in the Differences and Interventions Among Childhood Developmental Conditions…

Reflexogenic systems play one of the most significant roles in maintaining the health of the nervous system and are almost always utilized in one way or another during the Brain Based Therapies utilized in Functional Neurological Rehabilitation. Reflexogenic systems are complex and interactive such that higher functioning reflexes suppress and modulate more primitive reflexes in healthy individuals. As neurological health deteriorates, primitive reflexes may re-emerge, interfering in aspects of normal daily life, such as a person’s ability to stand or sit comfortably over time, walking, running and exercise, reading comfortably without avoidance or fatigue, digesting without acid reflux, balancing without risk of falling, being able to think without moving your mouth, being able to chew without biting your cheek or tongue, etcetera. As you can see, these reflexogenic systems play an important role in your quality of life and safety. Reflexogenic systems can be harnessed to provide powerful and specific therapeutic benefit. Follow this link to learn more about some of the reflex therapies we harness for health.

One of the hallmark methods of a Functional Neurologist are Functional Neurological Rehabilitation Exercises. These Brain Based Exercises are personalized to the unique needs of the patient based upon signs and observations from the Modified Functional Neurological Exam. Brain Based Exercises may be combined to harness immense power to evoke neuroplasticity and improve neurological function. Brain Based Exercises may be suggested to the patient as home based therapy promoting faster and steadier progress. Follow this link to learn more about Functional Neurological Rehabilitation and Brain Based Exercises.

Joint mobilization provides powerful and important feedback into the nervous system. The brain requires constant stimulation to remain healthy. The only source of stimulation that remains constant comes from the effect gravity has by stimulating nerve endings in our joints, muscles and tendons. In fact, toddlers walk before they talk for very important neuro-developmental reasons. The stimulation from an upright spine and from standing up on two legs and walking actually drives the development of the frontal lobes which is necessary for them to be able to talk.

There is a major and important difference between a Chiropractor trained in Neurology and that of a doctor of Chiropractic untrained in Chiropractic Neurology. Although the techniques used may be similar, or in some cases identical, the application is very different. A Chiropractic Neurologist stimulates specific joints in order to have neurological effects in specific areas. For example, if a patient had a neurological deficit on one side of their brain, the Chiropractic Neurologist will activate only the joints which show the most promise in bringing about improved brain function. Often, this involves only adjusting someone on one side of their spine and leaving the other side alone. Surprisingly, even if the side that hurts is on the opposite side from the adjustment, this approach will always yield superior results. Furthermore, it addresses the true answer to the question “why don’t my adjustments hold, doc? I know I feel better when I come but I go out so soon and have to keep coming back!” By addressing the underlying neurological reasons for their symptoms, the symptoms don’t have the mechanism in place to be re-created. Achieving neuroplasticity still requires repetition, but the end result is permanently improved function. Follow this link to learn more about spinal mobilization with a Chiropractic Neurologist.

EXTRA-SPINAL THERAPY (Shoulders/Hips, Elbows/Knees, Wrists/Ankles, Hands/Feet)

Obviously, if a patient presents with a shoulder or hip condition, the doctor will examine and address this. However, these issues are often not as they seem. Muscles surrounding a joint must have meticulously balanced tone in order to stabilize a joint in various postures and under various stressors. The muscle only does what it’s controlling nerve commands. These nerves, which reside in the spinal cord, receive major input from the brain. They also receive input from front to back, side to side and lower body to upper body and vice-versa. These nerve cells integrate or manage all this input in order to come up with the ideal strategy for stabilizing the joint in each moment.

If a joint gets injured and there wasn’t some outside trauma, such as a blow to the shoulder, then there is a pretty good chance that the neurological signaling to the joint was inappropriate allowing the joint to become vulnerable to injury. The injury usually occurs, not because someone was engaged in some activity, such as picking up a bowling ball, rather because the activity exploited their vulnerability leading to joint failure. This is more convincing to the injured person who was doing some simple task they have done plenty of times before with no problems.

At times, in order to restore the appropriate neurological control surrounding a joint, the muscles in the back of the arm or leg may be used to effect the ones on the front, or a leg may be used to effect an arm or the front of one leg may be used to effect the back of another. These complex relationships are well understood in “textbook” neurology, but have seldom been harnessed for their clinical value. Follow this link to learn more about extremity adjusting in Chiropractic Neurology.

For complex neurological reasons, simple movements quickly defeat themselves in terms of their neurological value as a form of stimulation. Complex movements renew and re-invigorate their value as a neurological stimulus. Some receptors (specialized nerve endings for sensation) only continue to fire into the nervous system when there is a change in the stimulus. An excellent example of this is in the receptors in our inner ear. This is why we are only aware of motion when our cars are speeding up and slowing down. This is the culprit behind many speeding tickets on long stretches of road.

A good knowledge of receptors and their characteristics allows a Chiropractic Neurologist to enrich the nervous system with powerful stimulation to evoke permanent improvement in function. In addition to moving arms and legs, movement therapy may involve spinning, sliding or rocking motions as Brain Based Therapies. Follow this link to learn more about Movement Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Balance is one of the most fundamental neurological functions. If you fail to keep your balance, you could fall and die! Balance, therefore, has survival value. As you can imagine, anything that has this much importance is going to effect a lot of things and can be either health sustaining or disastrous in terms of health. Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among individuals older than age 65. Twenty five percent of elderly individuals who sustain a hip fracture die within one year; and nearly 65,000 individuals older than age 65 sustain a traumatic brain injury annually as a result of a fall. In a recent study evaluating disability in the elderly population, published in the Journal JAMA, “Hospital admissions for falls were most likely to lead to disability”.

Balance testing is performed to determine optimal methods of balance therapy. Balance therapy is often combined with numerous supportive Brain Based Therapies for optimal results. Balance problems are often at the root of many neck and back symptoms. Many people who believe their balance is pretty good are shocked to discover how vulnerable they actually are due to hidden balance problems. Often people believe they got hurt because they slipped or tripped. Seldom do they realize there is an underlying reason that they fell, which left undetected and uncorrected may lead to future injury or worse. By the time you realize you have a balance problem, it has already become severe! Follow this link to learn more about Balance Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Vibration is a unique form of sensory stimulation because it stimulates more neurological areas and travels more neurological pathways than most other forms of sensory input. This fact makes vibration a particularly robust form of stimulation. Vibration therapy can be over stimulating, so it deserves monitoring though it combines well with other forms of Brain Based Therapy to evoke neuroplasticity and lasting improvements in neurological health. Follow this link to learn more about Vibration Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

The brain alone is said to consume 20% of the body’s oxygen and 10% of the body’s energy even though it only represents 2.5% of the body’s mass. Exercise has been proven to grow new neurons in the brain and improve learning as well. Exercise has been shown to have numerous exiting benefits regarding brain function, but exercise places additional demands upon the brain for oxygen and energy. Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (E.O.T.) is a technique which addresses these risks and has been shown through research to provide remarkable benefit. E.O.T. is a very powerful Brain Based Therapy and many people must start out with brief duration and slowly increase as they develop an increased tolerance. There are many conditions that respond particularly well to Exercise with Oxygen Therapy. In our office we teach, train and observe aerobic exercise to naturally increase the measureable oxygen levels. In the event that E.O.T. is needed, warranted and approved, we will work with you to see if you qualify for a home unit.

During periods of intense and focused brain activation, as is typical in the Brain Based Therapies of Functional Neurological Rehabilitation, it is often appropriate to supply oxygen enhanced room air. Providing extra oxygen reduces the possibility that the intense stimulation may exceed the energy production capacity in the stimulated area of the nervous system. Demanding more from an area than it can produce sufficient energy to meet that demand is called “exceeding the metabolic capacity” of that area. For optimal response to Brain Based Therapy, maximum stimulation without exceeding the metabolic capacity is ideal and achieves the fastest and most profound beneficial changes in neurological health.

Light is a fascinating stimulus due to the unique ways in which light effects the brain. Certain wavelengths of light have a greater probability to effect certain types of receptors more than others. These different types of receptors generate signals in different areas of the brain. The result is that different colors, or wavelengths of light, tend to effect specific areas of the brain more than others. This is probably why it seems universally believed that colors influence mood. Even bulls and bullfighters seem to understand this fact at a basic level.

Light therapy involves harnessing the power of color as well as changing patterns of light, sometimes delivered to very specific areas of the visual field, in order to evoke neuroplastic changes improving brain health. Light therapy offers one of the more powerful forms of Functional Neurological Rehabilitation and it combines well with other forms of Brain Based Therapy. Follow this link to learn more about Light Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Sound, like light, provides wonderful and unique opportunities to effect dynamic beneficial changes in brain function. Sound has the ability to effect the basic vegetative areas of our brain stem which is why “music soothes the savage beast” and can even induce a trance-like state. Sound also effects areas of our brain from which mood arises as well as areas of inspiration and motivation.

Similar to wavelengths of light, certain frequencies and patterns of sound have been suggested to effect specific areas of the brain differently. In fact, advances in electronics have enabled complex remastering of music which has been researched and demonstrated to be capable of effecting different areas of brain through variations in this specialized music. Even more exciting, research has been able to document improvements in brain function as a result of listening to these high tech sounds! There are many conditions that respond particularly well to Sound Therapy. Follow this link to learn more about Sound Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Electrical Stimulation has long been used in Chiropractic for musculoskeletal conditions. In addition to traditional uses, Electrical Stimulation Therapy offers a powerful tool for rehabilitation of people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where typically long nerves have been damaged by any one of several specific mechanisms. Obviously, the mechanism which caused the peripheral neuropathy in the first place should be addressed responsibly in order to have the most lasting and meaningful changes. However, in addition to genuine health improvements, Electrical Stimulation Therapy can gradually help improve the function nerves damaged by peripheral neuropathy. Additionally, the brain has numerous maps of the body in different locations. When the body’s signals are inappropriate or there are conflicting signals trying to integrate into the brain’s numerous “body maps”, then the body maps become distorted, fragmented or inappropriately cross-linked. Electrical Stimulation Therapy is one of many forms of Functional Neurological Rehabilitation which has the power to help restore distorted “body maps” in the brain.

Electrical Stimulation Therapy is particularly beneficial for rehabilitating Peripheral Neuropathy, as well as shoulder and hip syndromes, through its ability to help restore the nerve to health, when possible, as well as helping to restore the brain’s map of where the body is in space and how to coordinate this magnificently complex organism we inhabit. Follow this link to learn more about Electrical Stimulation Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Myofascial Therapy is a specialized form of manual therapy similar to advanced massage. Myofascial Therapy is performed, traditionally, to restore connective tissue symmetry through lengthening shortened tissues and stimulating weakened areas. One of the objectives of Myofascial Therapy is to improve blood flow to problematic muscles and body regions. Chronic myofascial dysfunction can cause a pain syndrome named Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

This type of pain syndrome is accompanied by inflammation and ultimately pesters free nerve endings in the tissues causing them to secrete chemicals which further irritate the nerve endings in a vicious cycle of pain and dysfunction. Over time, the nerve endings involved become chronically stimulated and the nervous system “learns” how to feel pain more efficiently. In other words, the more the nerve is stimulated the easier it is to stimulate, such that a lesser stimulus can provoke a greater response. This leads to brain areas which actually interpret the nerve impulses to also “learn” how to be more efficient at suffering with pain. Needless to say, this is a very unfortunate scenario. What started out as a neurological insufficiency to organize an appropriate muscular stability around a joint deteriorated to a Myofascial Pain Syndrome and eventually became Allodynia (this is the term for the neurologically amplified pain response).

True resolution of Fibromyalgia, and other allodenic pain syndromes, requires numerous Brain Based Therapies in addition to Myofascial Therapy. Follow this link to learn more about Myofacial Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Kinesio-Tape Therapy uses a specially formulated tape to mimic the effects of placing hands on the body. It is traditionally used to help remove fluid and inflammation from an area, to loosen a muscle that is too tight and to strengthen a muscle that is too weak.

Aside from direct trauma to the body, muscle and joint dysfunction stems from an underlying failure of the nervous system to appropriately stabilize the joint. There are numerous reasons why this can happen. Although these advanced uses of Kinesio-Tape are not part of the traditional methodology taught in K-T seminars, Kinesio-Tape is well suited to providing feedback in unique ways to address many of the reasons that the nervous system failed to provide appropriate stabilization to the region having the problem.

Kinesio-Tape Therapy, directed by a Chiropractic Neurologist, can be used to harness the power of numerous types of receptors in various tissues and can be directed to specific areas of dysfunction which were identified in a Functional Neurological Examination. Thus, the tape can maintain a specific Targeted Neurological Therapy for as long as the adhesive holds the tape in place. This is like walking around for 3-5 days with the doctor’s hands on “just the right spot” providing continual therapy, 24/7. Follow this link to learn more about Kinesio-Tape Therapy in Chiropractic Neurology.

Our postural regenerative programs are very unique from all other rehabilitative programs. This program can achieve very rapid changes, not only in changing your posture, but ultimately in changing your overall health. If you are accepted as a patient to participate in this rehabilitative program, it is because The Doctor believes that, with your 100% commitment, you can achieve optimal health in a relatively short period of time.

The Doctor’s recommendations for postural reconstruction are based on several considerations:

  1. Severity of postural/structural distortion determined on x-ray:
Acute angles in spine/posture (compression injuries to nerves).
  2. Current Phase of Degeneration:
Phase I – Loss of “arc of life” and lumbar lordosis (neck and low back curve).
Phase II – Some degeneration occurring, calcium spurs and thinning.
Phase III – Moderate degeneration, advanced spurs, badly damaged discs.
Phase IV – Severe degeneration, spurs connecting vertebrae, little to no disc space left.
  3. Severity of ligamentous damage/instability and involvement of vertebral levels.
  4. Current level of overall health.

Athletic and Work Injuries – Extremities

The chiropractic approach that works so well with the spine can be applied to other joints of your body. Virtually every articulation of your skeletal system is susceptible to fixations that can impair function and range of motion:

Keyboard Image
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common result of repetitive motions to abnormally functioning joints of the spine, arm and wrist. Chiropractic can be helpful.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually due to compression of the median nerve as it passes through the band of ligaments in your wrist. In many cases, the underlying cause is a misalignment of one or more joints of your neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. Identifying the involved joint(s) and a program of chiropractic care can often avoid surgery.

Motor Vehicle Accidents Injuries
Dr. Elkins and associates have completed many hours of post doctorate studies in the treatment of whiplash, post-traumatic head injuries, and commonly related motor vehicle traumatic injuries. We utilized objective neurological and orthopedic testing to document ones injury along with more advanced testing such as blind-spot mapping, videonystagmography, stress and motion x-rays.

Stress, teeth grinding and spinal problems can cause TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders where your jaw connects to your skull. (You can feel the joint move by placing your fingers in front of your ears and opening your mouth.) Skilled chiropractic care can restore proper nervous system control of involved muscles and ligaments, reducing pain, stiffness, clicking sounds or locked jaw.

Many shoulder problems originate in the area where the nerves branch from the spinal cord and exit the neck. Shoulder pain or pain radiating down the arm can be accompanied by weakness, numbness or tingling in the wrists or hands. Many patients report dramatic improvement with chiropractic care.

Classic tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a repetitive strain injury that often afflicts the dominant arm. It is seen among carpenters, mechanics, office workers, cashiers and those who perform repeated hammering, grasping and rotary forearm motions. A thorough examination followed by appropriate chiropractic care can produce excellent results.

The hips and sacrum, considered the “pelvic girdle,” is the foundation of your spine. These sacroiliac joints can affect nerves exiting the spine. While the chiropractic adjustment of the hips can produce excellent results, many hip problems can be caused from malfunctioning joints above or below the pelvis.

The ankle is the most frequently injured joint in the body. “Pronation,” in which the feet flare outward and kneecaps rotate inward, is the most common foot problem. When weak arches cause the bones of the foot to drop to an unstable position, stress on the foot increases. Adjusting malfunctioning joints of the feet, combined with custom shoe orthotics, can reduce tenderness, improve your gait and stabilize the entire skeletal system.

While many health problems can be traced to the spine, other joints of the body can be involved. When chiropractic techniques are applied, range of motion can be improved and painful inflammation reduced. Without drugs or surgery!

The ArthroStim™
We use the ArthroStim™ adjusting instrument.
Instead of the traditional thrust by hand, this handheld instrument introduces the precise energy needed for optimum correction. Our patients appreciate that we can avoid the twisting, turning or “cracking” of joints.

Pleasant Tapping

The ArthroStim Image
The ArthroStim® activates proprioceptors and mechanoreceptors without recruiting nocioceptors. In other words, it feels good and works great!

Instead of a single thrust, the ArthroStim™ delivers a series of “taps.” In fact, 12 taps per second. (Also known as the low beta somatomotor rhythm.) This is so quick, we avoid the all too common reaction of tensing up to “guard” the area being adjusted. (One more reason why we see such great results.)

Variety of Positions
Some types of problems seem to resolve better when the adjustment is delivered while seated or standing, such as a car accident injuries. Naturally, the ArthroStim™ permits this type of flexibility.

It’s also helpful when attending to extremity joints, such TMJ problems, shoulders, knees and other areas where precision is important.

Patient Benefits

We have chosen this approach because of the great results it produces and the chorus of countless delighted patients who sing its praises:

  • Quick and often dramatic results
  • Comfortable and noninvasive
  • Low force and highly precise
